Who was Rick, and who was John, and why did the former give the latter a book in 1985, a book that I just finished reading Friday night, a book with an inscription that I had never noticed before.

I find it curious and sad to have wound up with Rick’s book, and wonder what’s become of John, and whether his gift was appreciated.
